Enhance Network Performance with CorePower SSDs 530x360.jpg (137 KB)

Executive Summary

The client manufactures industrial-grade networking devices, primarily Ethernet Switches. In this application, hard shutdowns are often unavoidable, so the client required SSDs with exceptional data integrity as well as a compact form factor due to limited space. Apacer provided specialized SSD solutions that precisely met these requirements, integrating CorePower technology to mitigate the risks associated with hard shutdowns.

Challenges

The client is a manufacturer and supplier of advanced networking devices. Their latest project came with stricter-than-usual space limitations, so when it came time to source SSDs, they approached Apacer. With more than 25 years of experience developing highly reliable storage products, Apacer was a trusted partner capable of providing the specialized solutions required for their design.

Beyond space constraints, the client also needed to address a second challenge. Modern industrial-grade network switches and routers often lack on/off switches, making hard shutdowns unavoidable. For many SSDs, sudden power loss can compromise data integrity—or even affect the ability to boot—depending on which data is interrupted.

Because such failures could disrupt the networks their products support, the client required a storage solution that would maintain data integrity even under hard shutdown conditions.

Solutions & Technologies

To resolve the space limitation challenge, Apacer’s engineers recommended the SV25P-M242—a SATA SSD in the compact 2242 form factor. The 2242 standard is widely used in designs where board space is scarce, yet very few manufacturers still offer 2242 SSDs with SATA interfaces. Apacer does, and this was exactly the type of specialized solution the client was hoping to find. For the second SSD, where slightly more space was available, Apacer supplied the SV25P-M280, a 2280-form-factor SATA SSD.

To address the risk of hard shutdowns, both SSDs were equipped with Apacer’s CorePower technology. CorePower integrates a power-loss detection IC and tantalum capacitors into the SSD. When a hard shutdown occurs, the detection IC immediately signals the controller, which draws supplemental power from the capacitors to complete flushing volatile data into non-volatile storage. Once power is restored, the SSD retrieves this data, preventing corruption or loss. In this application, CorePower ensures reliable operation and uninterrupted performance across all networked devices.

Benefits

By partnering with Apacer, the customer achieved the following:

  • 2242 Form Factor with SATA Interface: Apacer supplied a rare combination of a compact 2242 form factor paired with a SATA interface, meeting the client’s unique design constraints.
  • CorePower Protection: This technology enhances data integrity during hard shutdowns, ensuring more reliable operation for networked devices.

The client successfully completed their networking product using Apacer’s SSDs, and their in-house testing confirmed that CorePower maintained flawless data integrity even during hard shutdowns. Satisfied with the results, the client has since requested samples of Apacer’s 2242 and 2280 PCIe models for their next project to achieve higher transmission speeds and even greater network reliability.
